Hypnosis and its derivative, hypnotherapy, have been the focus of many misconceptions created by layman's imagination. Some believe them to be some type of magic while others hesitate to even recognize their existence. Given below are some common misconceptions prevalent about hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.
There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. It is a very simple technique, which can be understood without much difficulty with the help of psychology and other scientific procedures. Even people who have seen hypnosis on others often refuse to acknowledge it. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But this again is a complete fallacy. Even mentally strong people can fall under the charms of a specialist hypnosis practitioner.
Another belief is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a serious misconception. A hypnotized person is fully awake to what is going on around him. That individual is just in a relaxed state where the attention spans are very high and the person can accept new inputs easily.
Some scientific findings have claimed that only about 5% of the population is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third misconception on this list. The scientists are somewhat true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis technique without considering individual differences in nature and temperament. Hypnosis can't be straight jacketed like that and works only if there are different methodologies for different personality styles.
Meditation and hypnosis are usually confused with each other. However, communication between the subject and the practitioner is indispensable in hypnosis, while meditation is like an appointment with the self without any communication involved. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not true. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, on the other hand the very basis of the hypnosis technique is communication.
A majority of people believe that it is not possible to bring about alterations in one's appearance and conduct through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis definitely cannot alter the body in unnatural ways. But by mentally conditioning an individual to abandon addictive behaviour like overeating and chain smoking, and by heightening one's inspiration levels, hypnosis can usher in significant physical alterations in a person and pave the way for a healthier body.
Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a vital role to play in the overall welfare of a person, and not giving them a try just because of some misconceptions is a missed opportunity.
